In this seminar, we will have a close look at digital libraries. Each participant will present one topic in a scientific talk. However, the real focus of this seminar lies on how to give clear and interesting presentations. For this purpose, we will analyze different talks and will introduce other presentation tools than power point.

Important notice: In order to better understand the subject of the seminar, please attend the seminar presentation on Thursday 09.02.2011, 08:00 in PK 2.2. Please also have a look at our presentation slides.

Note that the number of participants is limited to seven. Registration will be handled by the institute. Due to the small number of seminar slots, we recommend registration only for students that are not afraid of hard work.

Important: This seminar is designed for master students. However, bachelor students may participate if they want to, although we do not recommend it. If you are a bachelor student, please think twice before registering (please contact us if you have any questions). This seminar is be part of the ITIS M.Sc. program. Therefore, the seminar will be held in English language.

Materials

A good starting point is the excellent book Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath, which is about how to communicate in a sticky fashion, that is, how to make sure that the audience clearly realizes your point and easily can remember it and its importance.

In addition as an introduction to Semantic Digital Libraries the book by Kruk and McDaniel could be read.

Sarting Point for the topics:

From Past to Present
The presenter should give an overview about the history of (digital) libraries and should stop at the present. Possible keywords and starting points can be: 

Digital Libraries in Use
This talk should come up with current state of the art digital libraries. Introducing the Highlights and the underlying techniques of, e.g.:

Quality in DL
Quality in DL libraries is an important issue. Thus, please introduce why quality is important, how quality can be defined etc.

Ontologies for Digital Libraries
This talk should give a short overview about ontologies in general and further introduce ontologies useable in digital libraries.

Content Indexing
The presenter should give an overview of some indexing methods or should explizit take one method and describe this method in more detail. Starting points can be:

Content Ranking
This talk should give some insights what document ranking is about, why document ranking is importantant and which differences between document ranking in the Web and digital libraries exisit.

Long Time Preservation
Data preservation is a crucial topic for digital libaries. Please give insights what this topic is about and why it is so important.
